Dear YOGA Magazine readers,

It’s always a pleasure to introduce the magazine and we highly appreciate your ongoing support even amidst the pandemic. Spring season has arrived with loads of energy of new beginnings and expressions of joy and happiness. Manifesting all the positivity flowing around us, we have brought together a stellar line-up of contributors – providing practical tips on yoga and lifestyle - to help you kick-start the month of May.

In this issue, we catch up with yoga teacher Rehana Jawadwala, who talks about her growing companionship and bonds with her daughters through shared yoga experience in ‘Babywearing Yoga: An egalitarian practice’. The love/hate yoga journey of Kristina Rihanoff culminating in the holistic benefits of yoga is indeed interesting and I hope you will enjoy the ‘morning vital flow’ shared by her.

Our series of yoga poses brings you five effective poses to decrease lower back pain from an internal medicine physician and yoga therapist Ingrid Yang. Maja Sobieeska provides some wonderful advice on why and how you should incorporate yoga practice during period. Katie Owens presents reflection and thoughts of three Iyengar yogis on the potential barriers for men starting yoga and what could encourage them to give yoga a try.

‘Yoga of Sound’ is a theme of two insightful articles. Nikki Slade explores chanting mantras as an experience that pulls the inner self while Laura and Joshua Haberstroh discuss Nada yoga practice with singing bowls and its many health benefits in changing one’s vibration.

This issue also delves into two alternative therapies. Nicole Windas shares how aromatic essential oils extracted from plants support the body’s natural healing processes and enhance well-being. And Roman Sieler reveals one of the oldest and mysterious medicine - Siddha - practiced in India.

Victor M. Parachin continues with his enlightening articles - this time looking at the life and teachings of a Zen Lady, Ruth Fuller Sasaki, who brought Zen Buddhism to the Westerners. And we learn more about the rise of yoga in pop culture through Wellness philanthropist Faith Hunter and hosts of Alt.Pop.Repeat. In our Nutrition section, Keith Squires shares an authentic Indian recipe of heavenly Dhal that can be prepared in just 10 quick steps.

We are pleased to share three inspirational personal stories: Sarah Okin on how embracing yoga during the pandemic is helping her on the road to breast cancer recovery; Kathryn Ashworth on practicing yoga to help cope with the loss of a loved one; and Arron Parcak on how yoga helped him overcome his alcohol addiction. Plus we explore the book, Mindfulness – the unlikeliest best seller - by Professor Mark Williams and Dr Danny Penman, and an excerpt from Embrace Yoga’s Roots by Susanna Barkataki in “Yogis and ‘I Don’t See Color’”.

There is much more for you to explore and enjoy. Be sure to check out Yoga Rocks; a spectacular venue for holistic yoga retreat which I have personally experienced.

May you be blessed this month with light and love.
